AFCI Breaker Keeps Tripping? A Troubleshooting Guide for Electricians
AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers have been required in residential bedrooms since 2002 and now cover most living areas. They've prevented countless electrical fires — but they also generate a steady stream of service calls for nuisance tripping. Here's how to diagnose them systematically.
AFCI Basics: What the Breaker Is Actually Detecting
Modern AFCI breakers look for two things: 1. Series arcs — a break in a single conductor (loose connection, damaged wire) 2. Parallel arcs — a short between hot and neutral or hot and ground (nail through cable, pinched wire)
Combination AFCIs (required since 2008) detect both. Older "branch/feeder" AFCIs only detect parallel arcs.
The 5 Most Common Causes of AFCI Trips
1. Shared Neutrals (Multi-Wire Branch Circuits) The #1 cause. AFCI breakers need to monitor both hot AND neutral current. A shared neutral means current returns on a different circuit's neutral, and the AFCI sees an imbalance → trip.
2. Grounded Neutral (Neutral Touching Ground) In sub-panels, neutrals and grounds must be isolated. If a neutral touches a ground anywhere downstream, the AFCI trips. Check every junction box — especially old work where someone might have landed a neutral on a ground screw.
3. Old Motors and Brushed Appliances Vacuum cleaners, old ceiling fans, and power tools with carbon brushes create small arcs by design. Try the circuit with all loads unplugged. If it holds, plug things in one at a time to find the culprit.
4. Loose Backstabbed Receptacles Backstab connections loosen over time from thermal cycling. The AFCI detects the micro-arcing. This is a feature, not a bug — fix the connection. (Better yet, stop backstabbing receptacles.)
5. Defective Breaker Siemens and Eaton AFCI breakers have improved dramatically since the early 2000s, but failures happen. If you've ruled out everything else on a circuit that used to work fine, swap the breaker. About 5-10% of persistent AFCI nuisances end up being a bad breaker.
Diagnostic Process (Save This for Service Calls)
1. Ask: "What were you doing when it tripped?" (vacuuming? using a space heater?) → If specific appliance, test that circuit with appliance unplugged 2. Unplug EVERYTHING on the circuit. Reset breaker. → Holds? Plug in one at a time. Find the culprit. → Still trips? Go to step 3. 3. Kill power. Open every box on the circuit. When to Tell the Customer "This Is Normal"

If the AFCI trips only when a specific device is used, the circuit is not the problem. Recommend the customer replace the appliance or move it to a non-AFCI circuit (where Code allows).
