Level 2 EV Charger Installation: Complete Guide for Electricians (2026)
EV charger installations are one of the fastest-growing revenue streams for residential electricians. Here's how to do them right — and profitably.
Level 1 vs Level 2: What Your Customer Actually Needs
- Level 1 (120V, 12-16A): Adds 3-5 miles of range per hour. Uses a standard 15A or 20A outlet. Good for plug-in hybrids, not practical for full EVs.
- Level 2 (240V, 16-80A): Adds 25-40+ miles of range per hour. Requires a dedicated circuit. This is what 90% of your customers will ask for.
Load Calculation: Don't Skip This
NEC 220.87 requires a load calculation before adding an EV charger. With a 50A EV charger on a 200A service that already has electric range, dryer, and A/C, you're looking at a real load of ~170A. That's tight but usually passes.
Use the optional method (NEC 220.82) for residential. Add the EV charger at 125% of its rating per NEC 625.41 — a 48A charger counts as 60A in your load calc.
NEMA 14-50 vs Hardwired: Which One?

Recommendation: Hardwire whenever possible. EV manufacturers prefer it, and avoiding a $120 GFCI breaker on an outlet that's already GFCI-protected inside the charger saves you and the customer headaches.
NEC 625 Requirements
- 625.17(C): Coupler/connector must be located within 18 inches of the parking stall
- 625.40: Each EV charger needs its own dedicated branch circuit
- 625.41: Overcurrent protection sized at 125% of maximum load
- 625.54: GFCI protection required for receptacles (not hardwired units)
Common Issues That Fail Inspection
1. Undersized wire — 48A continuous on #8 Romex? Nope. The 60°C column limits #8 NM-B to 40A. Use #6 NM-B or #8 THHN in conduit. 2. Missing disconnect — If the charger is >60A or >150V to ground, a separate disconnect is required within sight. 3. Romex outdoors — NM cable is not rated for wet locations. If you're running outside, use THHN in conduit or UF-B.
