Sizing the Transfer Switch

The transfer switch must be rated for the generator's output OR the total connected load, whichever is greater.

For a portable generator installation: - 30A inlet + 10-circuit manual transfer = good for 7,500W generator - 50A inlet + 10-16 circuit panel = good for 12,500W generator

For standby generators, match the ATS amp rating to the generator output: - 14-20kW generator → 100A ATS - 22-26kW generator → 200A ATS

NEC 702: Optional Standby Systems

Key requirements every electrician should know:

  • 702.4(B): The standby system must have adequate capacity — do a load calculation
  • 702.5: Transfer equipment must be rated for the full connected load, but you CAN use load management (load shedding) to reduce the required ATS rating
  • 702.7: A permanent plaque/directory must be installed at the service listing all circuits on standby power
  • 702.10: Portable generators connected to premises wiring must use a transfer switch — no suicide cords, no backfeeding

Grounding and Bonding for Generators

NEC 250.34 and 250.35 cover generator grounding:

Portable generators connected via transfer switch: The generator is a separately derived system IF the transfer switch switches the neutral. If it does, you need a grounding electrode at the generator. If the transfer switch does NOT switch the neutral (solid neutral), no separate grounding electrode needed.

Standby generators: Generally treated as separately derived systems. Bond neutral to ground at the generator, install ground rod(s) per 250.53.

Load Management: The Key to Right-Sizing

Instead of buying a 200A ATS for a 20kW generator, use load shedding: - Shed A/C compressors during generator operation - Shed electric range, dryer, EV charger - Keep essential loads: well pump, fridge, freezer, furnace, a few lights, sump pump

This lets you pair a 20kW generator with a 100A ATS, saving the customer $1,500+ on equipment.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Pull the permit — generator installs always need a permit and inspection 2. Mount transfer switch — adjacent to main panel (or integrated into the panel for generator-ready panels) 3. Install generator inlet box — outdoor-rated, at least 18" above grade, away from doors/windows (exhaust clearance) 4. Move selected circuits — re-land branch circuit wires into transfer switch 5. Wire ATS control cable — N1/N2 utility sensing, 23/194 transfer signal, T1 battery charger (for standby generators) 6. Ground and bond — per manufacturer instructions and NEC 250 7. Label everything — directory at transfer switch AND main panel 8. Test under load — simulate outage, verify transfer and load behavior

Common Mistakes

1. Not sizing the gas line — a 20kW generator needs ~200,000 BTU/hr. The existing gas meter may not support it. Coordinate with the gas utility. 2. Inlet box too close to generator exhaust — CO poisoning risk. Minimum 5 feet from any opening. 3. Forgetting the cold weather kit — in northern states, generators need battery warmers and oil heaters to start reliably in winter. 4. Undersized control wiring for long runs — follow manufacturer specs for wire gauge vs distance.

Pro Tip

Take a "before" photo of the main panel directory before moving circuits. It saves you 20 minutes of tracing circuits later.
